Could a Simple Vitamin Help Prevent New Skin Cancers?
Many of our patients often ask us what proactive measures they can take to protect their skin from sun damage. A new study of more than 33,000 U.S. veterans found that taking nicotinamide—a form of vitamin B3—may help reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. People who took nicotinamide 500 mg twice daily had a 14% lower overall risk of new skin cancers compared to those who didn’t. Even more encouraging, those who started the vitamin after their first skin cancer had up to a 54% lower risk of developing another. Nicotinamide is safe, inexpensive, and available over the counter, and it can serve as a supplement to your daily sunscreen and regular skin checks. If you’re interested in learning whether nicotinamide might be right for you—or if it’s time for your next skin exam—we welcome you to schedule an appointment with our clinic. It could be a simple daily step toward protecting your skin’s health.
